 How VoIP Works?

VoIP or Voice over IP is the transmission of voice traffic over IP-based networks. Traditional telephone phone system uses public switched telephone network (PSTN) to send analog voice signal on the other end. VoIP sends voice information in digital form in discrete packets rather than by using public switched telephone network (PSTN).

Within VoIP, voice is converted from an analog signal to a digital signal by VoIP Adapter (ATA) and then packets are delivered to the other end over the Internet. At the end of each connection is a system that re-assembles and puts together the original voice signal. This re-assembly is then converted to an analog signal which can be listened to via a standard telephone device.

Protocols used to carry voice signals over the IP network are commonly referred to as Voice over IP or VoIP protocols.

You can make a VoIP call using IP Phone, VoIP Adapter or using your computer. Computer to Computer calls may be free of cost in many cases. Most of the companies provide free software to make a VoIP call using computer. You should have a microphone, a sound card and speakers on your computer.

How to make calls?

You may use your basic phone with VoIP adapter, IP Phones or your personal computer to make VoIP calls.

If you use an IP Phone or regular phone, you place and receive calls just like your regular telephone service.

If you use computer, dial numbers from a pad on software you installed.
